Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination has become an increasingly popular method of equine breeding in many breeds. Here at Talgrwn Stud we have successfully inseminated mares from various breeds and disciplines, including Sports Horses, Standardbreds, Irish Draughts, Arabs, Suffolk Punch, Akhal-teke, Welsh Cobs, American Paints, etc.

The main advantages of AI are:

  • Increases the choice of stallions available.

  • Reduces the need for mare and young foal to travel to stallion.

  • Reduces the risk of transmitting venereal disease.

  • Reduces the risk of injury to the mare by the stallion.

Semen can be obtained from within the UK, Europe, or from further afield (providing the semen is accompanied by the appropriate Health Certificates).

Semen used can be chilled or frozen.

CHILLED SEMEN

Chilled semen received from different studs throughout the UK and Europe.

  • Owner selects stallion and checks availability of chilled semen.

  • It is the mare's owner’s responsibility to agree and settle stud fees which may include collection and delivery charges.

  • Mare brought to Talgrwn Stud just before she is due to come into season. This allows for close monitoring by ultrasound scan to determine the optimum time for insemination.

  • Talgrwn Stud Services liaise with stud where semen will be collected.

  • Semen delivered to Talgrwn Stud, mare inseminated and receives post insemination treatment.

  • Ultrasound scan to determine pregnancy from 15 days post insemination. If not in foal, reinseminated at next cycle.

  • Following a positive scan, it is highly recommended that a repeat scan be performed at about 42 days to confirm that pregnancy is progressing normally.

FROZEN SEMEN

Frozen semen received from different studs throughout the UK and Worldwide

  • Owner selects stallion and checks availability of frozen semen.

  • It is the mare’s owner’s responsibility to agree and settle stud fees which may include collection and delivery charges.

  • Mare brought to Talgrwn Stud just before she is due to come into season. This allows for close monitoring by ultrasound scan to determine the optimum time for insemination.

  • Semen delivered to and stored at Talgrwn Stud (if not already here).

  • At time of ovulation mare inseminated using Deep Uterine Insemination Technique and receives post insemination treatment.

  • Ultrasound scan to determine pregnancy from 14 days post insemination. If not in foal, re-inseminated at next cycle.

  • Following a positive scan, it is highly recommended that a repeat scan be performed at about 42 days to confirm that pregnancy is progressing normally.
